Make it your own

Devo had “Satisfaction” by The Stones. Johnny Cash had “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails. Type O Negative had “Day Tripper” by the Beatles. All of these artists covered songs that were already written and recorded but the one thing they all have in common with each other is the way they paid homage to these songs and remained true to themselves.

Some groups and solo artists have covered songs without doing anything different which is a waste of time. The best way to pay tribute to your favorite artist and influences is to make it your own. If people hear your version of something and they think you created it, then you know you’ve done it the right way. The right way and doing it your way is the only way.

Normally when recording, I do original material only. The last two recording sessions however, I decided to do something different. I thought it would be fun to take a few of my favorite songs and put my own spin on them.

“Are friends electric” by Gary Numan, two latin songs “Ponte Duro” by the Fania All Stars and “Labamba” by Ritchie Valens. I also did a medley called “You can’t do that rebel rebel” which is the theme song from You can’t Do That On Television into David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel”.

Josh and I had a blast and learned a lot in the process. Sometimes it’s good to have an ice breaker especially during the crazy periods in our lives. For me it was a chance to show my appreciation of these artists and the impact their work had made on me.

All the pioneers and legends have truly paved the way for myself and other musicians around the world. Their contributions musically, creatively and socially will always be remembered forever. Here is my tribute to them.
