It’s what we do
When Jason and I tell people about the projects we do, we are asked questions such as “who did your website?” or “who played the guitars?” etc. Our answer is “Josh did the website” and “Jason performed on all the instruments”.
It seems over and over again people have a hard time believing that only two people were involved in creating these projects. Since 2004 Jason has recorded six solo albums performing all of the music and vocals himself. I did all the graphics and photography for the six albums and the music recording and engineering for five of them.
We have said many times over that self sufficiency is one of our major strengths. If it weren’t for our perseverance in accomplishing these goals with the tools we had available, none of our imaginings would have ever come to be.
We try to be humble when talking about our skills, but I know that the two of us are proud of the things we have done. With each new project we further our abilities, always wanting to get better at what we do.
We both have a passion that I think shows through in our work together. It is that passion which drives us to continually sharpen our skills so that each new project will be even better than the previous.
On some projects we had ideas which we didn’t think could be accomplished unless we had help. Some scenes from Track Record required multiple people to be on camera at the same time and try as we might, we couldn’t find anyone willing to help us film our first major music video. When we told people about the project they didn’t seem to believe us.
Having no other options and not wanting to compromise the integrity of the project, we found alternative methods to accomplish our goals. It may not be immediately apparent but more than 75% of all the shots in the music video were done on blue screen.
To say that it took a long time to complete this project would be a major understatement. The very nature of completing the shots in this manner as well as other events in our lives caused the timeline of the project to span over almost four years.
In 2008 we officially released the video onto youtube. Is it a technological masterpiece? No. But it is damn good for two guys who never went to college. I figured in this article I would reveal some of the magic behind the images we create. In the music video there is a slide presentation showing six slides.
One of the slides is of a man being dragged with a hood over his head. This image is a composite featuring seven different photographs. Each person in the picture is Jason. Very labor intensive process but the end result is very convincing.
It may take lots of time, blood, sweat and tears but it’s what we do. It’s what we love. We live for this.
