Endless Stupidity

It could simply be my imagination, but it seems that now more than ever people are doing stupid things. And not just acts that didn’t involve thought, acts that for whatever reason they felt they were justified in committing. Case in point ask yourself, is it wrong to steal?

YES! Of course it’s wrong. I like to think that most of us are taught this when we’re children. However I’m finding that the average person seems to have skipped this critical lesson.

I work in a smoke shop that retails tobacco and alcohol. Not my first choice of jobs but they treat me very well and it pays my bills. Normal day to day operations are not very demanding, what is demanding however is dealing with the stupid people.

Today alone I had to waste my time dealing with shoplifters. Not one but TWO! Unbelievable! I’m old fashioned when it comes to dealing with problems like this and I’m not afraid to confront these people.

I find more often than not even in the face of undeniable video evidence, these people continue to say that they didn’t do it. It goes on endlessly up until the point when the police arrive and then they say “yes I did it, so what”.

And what’s even more unbelievable is that these people seldom get arrested. Is it a petty crime? Yes. But I believe it ceases to be a petty crime when the person commits a similar act more than one time. Then I think the appropriate action is to take them away in handcuffs.

If people like this never learn from their mistakes they will continue to act this way their entire lives. These are the same type of people who you see fighting and screaming at each other in public. Stop and think about how many times you’ve witnessed a couple yelling and swearing at each other in a crowded store. It’s like they’re oblivious to the fact that others are watching. Whatever happened to respect and decency.

I don’t think these things are dead but they certainly aren’t shining through like they used to. I do my best each day to be professional and courteous in both my personal and business life. Sometimes it’s hard like today, however I get through it. I have to.

My purpose in writing this article wasn’t to rant. My purpose was to let others who feel the same way know they’re not alone. I think it’s time for respect and decency to make a come back. I think it’s time for people to be truthful and honest. I think it’s time for people to take responsibility for their actions.

People like us can lead the way. Don’t just accept these kinds of behaviors as “normal”. If you see someone committing a crime don’t look the other way, report it! If people are fighting in public and causing a disturbance, call them out on it and tell them take it elsewhere or shut the hell up. And for all those people who refuse to accept responsibility for the problems and harm they cause tell them to grow the hell up.

Ah… I feel so much better having gotten that off my chest. Til' next time!
