Coming of Age
I made a lot of mistakes in my life time. I’ve also learned a lot in the process. Life is truly an amazing journey and one that is filled with many things good and bad.
The trick is to get something even out of the bad things that happen to us. Easier said than done, however it is possible. I have come a long way with certain things in my life and there is no question about it. Some of the mistakes that I have made in the past have gotten me into trouble.
Some mistakes I have made have almost cost me my life. I’ve also made bad choices like moving in with the wrong people or dating someone I should have never dated. That’s another thing, the word regret. It’s not good to have any regret in life. Unfortunately shit happens and regret has been known to come with it.
The thing is that there’s not much we can do about it. All we can do at that point is move ahead no matter how difficult it is. As we grow we’re learning and boy have I learned! I have learned so much during my journey here on planet earth that it would take me months to come up with a list, maybe even longer.
As we get older we gain more experience and how it is used depends on us. Lessons learned can effect the choices we make, it can also determine certain situations that we are in or get into. Either way it’s important to embrace those experiences good and bad.
Now I know that might sound contradictory but it really makes a lot of sense. I understand that it’s not easy to get over certain things that happen to a person, believe me I know.
Everyone deals with things differently, if we take something good from even the worst situations then that is a sign of true growth and progression. When I was younger my father had told me something that I would never forget. He said, “Jay, you never arrive.” Now even though I wasn’t 100% sure, I eventually figured it out. He was basically saying that you never stop learning. He’s almost 70 years old and even he is still learning something new all the time. It’s pretty amazing when you stop to think about it.
At the time he was referring to my drumming abilities, but you can also apply his philosophy to anything in life. For example there’s a technique that I have been working on for over 15 years now and I still don’t have it down. You know what’s funny? I created it! Jeeesh! I can see it now, I’ll be 70 and finally have it down and then I’ll tell all my friends about it. After that there will be another thing to learn and another and another etc etc. That’s called not arriving.
